Gaps in antenatal records between visits
The 2022 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey reports a maternal mortality ratio of 104 deaths per 100,000 live births for the seven years preceding the survey.
Tanzania has a national maternal and child health handbook, but its distribution has stopped. Antenatal records stay in a paper chart held by the facility, or on a single card given to the mother.
A woman may attend more than one facility during her pregnancy, and the card is not always presented at the next visit. When earlier records are unavailable, the midwife opens a new antenatal form and reconfirms what she needs from the woman and from whatever paper is at hand.
The longer that takes, the less of the consultation remains for health education and for explaining test results. Longer consultations also mean longer waits.
Tying the record to the individual, and connecting it over time
Examination records are held in the cloud and tied to each mother. Past records can be retrieved on the spot even when the facility changes.
The less time a midwife spends gathering information again, the more of the visit remains for health guidance and for explaining test results.
Knowledge at the moment it is needed
The application shows the week of pregnancy in plain terms and sends the knowledge and cautions that matter at that stage.
Making the pregnancy visible
Showing the week of pregnancy and sending reminders for the next visit help a mother keep the date of her next appointment in view.
